The Tsimbaly, or hammered dulcimer, is an ancient trapezoidal string instrument from Belarus and Ukraine, played by striking or plucking strings. Originating in the Middle East, dulcimers spread to Europe during the Crusades and are known by various names worldwide, including cimbalom, santur, and yang q’in. Modern Tsimbaly are fully chromatic with a broad range, using high-tension steel strings to produce a loud, rich tone.
