For Zaki Knapen, art has never been simply something he creates—it is who he is. Hisextraordinary artistic journey began in his native Belgium, where, at just six years old, one of his first works of art was selected for exhibition in the Polder Museum. That remarkable achievement marked the beginning of a lifelong pursuit of creativity that has spanned continents, artistic disciplines, and decades.

Born and raised in Belgium, Zaki’s European heritage continues to influence his work today. Throughout his career, he has drawn inspiration from his travels, diverse cultures, nature, literature, and the emotional experiences that shape every stage of life. The result is a distinctive body of work that balances bold abstraction with quiet reflection, inviting viewers to discover their own meaning within each piece.

After living on the Caribbean Island of St. Martin, Zaki’s artistic vision expanded dramatically. His paintings grew larger in scale, richer in texture, and increasingly expressive, while retaining the vibrant color that has become his signature. Inspired by renowned artists including Hans Hofmann, Joan Mitchell, Jackson Pollock, Robert Motherwell, and Mark Rothko, he developed a unique visual language where color, movement, splatters, drips, scratches, and layered surfaces work together to create paintings filled with both energy and tranquility.

Over the years, Zaki has created several celebrated series reflecting different chapters of his life. His French Series honors his European roots before evolving into the acclaimed Edo Series. After relocating to Chicago, the city’s ever-changing skyline inspired the Chicago Series, capturing shifting light, seasons, and architecture through abstraction. His playful American Stereotype Series offered a whimsical interpretation of American culture, while “No Room for Buffalo” explored memories of solitary sailing voyages, vast landscapes, and the spirit of freedom through expressive textures and movement across the canvas.
